Power House Student - Project #1
Jarvis has been speaking with faculty about an exercise afterschool program. He has found a possible space at Powerhouse to run program, and he wants to do a once a week event focusing on exercise and nutrition. He is speaking with an aerobics instructor about specific exercise regimens and he is thinking of making handouts on diet and exercise. He will advertise around school to get more interest, and his project is still early in development.

Regina is working on a dance team/dance program. She has contacted Powerhouse faculty and is trying to generate interest for the program. She is currently advertising around school and looking to find a facility where she could have her dance practice. Her goal is to provide a non-violent afterschool activity that will be a confidence-builder and keep students off the streets.

Michelle's project has been putting together a “movie night” at Powerhouse to give students a positive afterschool outlet one day each week. She handed out surveys to gague interest in the program and to find out what type of movies the students would like to watch. There was lots of support from other students and requests to watch comedies and romance movies, and she worked closely with faculty to secure a room and make sure that her movies were school “appropriate.” She is currently running her program on Mondays after the school day and has been closely managed her budget to provide snacks and games. Her first movie shown was “Love and Basketball,” and the day proved a success.

Michael has been trying to create a “social empowerment” group called Brothers and Sisters Against Violence in his community. The purpose of the group is to bring young children and their parents together, once a week (or every 2 weeks), to participate in practical seminars and group exercises. The purpose is to educate parents and children on developing productive and healthy lifestyles and to avoid violence, pregnancy and other negative behavior. There would be a director responsible for its implementation and there would be many guest speakers. Right now he's searching for different leaders in the community and contacting them via letters and email. He is still looking for a location to hold meetings, but he has a promising start to his program.

Janelle created a self-esteem project for girls. She embarked on a pretty ambitious project that has been developing nicely. She has already spoken with people to be speakers and leaders at these "self-esteem meetings" that they will hold in community centers. She hopes to reach out to young women and teach about several issues that are prevalent in the community, including violence and teen pregnancy. She has been around junior high schools recruiting and speaking to at-risk youth to try and prevent many of the problems that she has noted in her high school classmates. She has meetings and a location at her school set up and has already been able to have her first session that has been a success.

Latisha created an after-school program devoted to painting three canvases promoting peace. She assembled a fellow uFLOW member and another artist from her school to assemble ideas and paint the canvases. She had to closely budget her money for supplies and met with school faculty to find a place to work on this artwork and also places to display the work in school. Her three paintings included a peace sign being constructed by people of all ethnicities and a mural depicting the peaceful colors of nightfall. The murals gave a call to peace and serenity and are now on display in Powerhouse, fostering an anti-violence movement.
